Regular exercise is so significant to our health.  Exercise can reduce the risks and symptoms of many physical and mental health issues.  Three health issues that can benefit from regular exercise are weight control, diseases such as coronary heart disease, and risk factors for disease, such as high blood pressure and high blood cholesterol (Health.gov., 2016).

Both diet and physical activity play a critical role in controlling your weight. Finding a balance between intake of calories and physical activity can be difficult for patients. Explaining to them that they do not have to do strenuous activities to maintain a healthy weight might encourage them to do more. Just walking or doing some form of cardio for 150 minutes a week will help maintain a healthy weight.

Heart disease and stroke are the number 1 killers in the US and can be prevented by regular exercise (AHA, 2014). The American Heart Association (AHA), recommends at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity at least 5 days per week for a total of 150. If a patient lives a sedentary lifestyle, they can start with as little as 10-15 minutes a day and work their way up to their goal. Before starting an exercise routine, it’s important to have patients talk to their doctor about how long their exercise sessions should be and what level of intensity is safe for them.

As a nurse educating patients is key. Assessing what kind of activities they enjoy and incorporating exercise into them would be beneficial for their health and wellbeing. Educating them that even a 10-minute moderate speed walk will help reduce potential health risks will encourage a healthier lifestyle.
