Physical activity and exercise can help prevent and manage diseases like Obesity, type 2 Diabetes and Coronary Heart Disease (CHD).
According to the CDC, more than one-third of U.S. adults and 17% for children and adolescents aged 2–19 years are obese. Obesity has led to over 120,000 preventable deaths each year in the United States. Heart disease is one of the leading causes of death in the United States (CDC, 2015). Obesity is actually the leading cause of heart diseases, stroke, and type 2 diabetes. In adults, type 2 diabetes accounts for about 90 to 95 percent of all diagnosed cases of diabetes. 1.7 million new cases of diabetes were diagnosed in U.S. adults in 2012, and the prevalence of type 2 diabetes is on the rise (Healthline, 2016). Coronary Heart Disease mortality on the other hand has declined in the United States since the 1960s as a result of improved treatment and better control of the risk factors. In 2010, the prevalence of CHD among those aged 18–44 years was 1.2% (CDC, 2011).
When recommending exercises, it is essential that we nurse remember that all patients are different with different environmental needs, stresses and commitments which should be considered prior to recommending which activities they should perform. In other for nurses to assist clients to incorporate exercise and physical activity to their health promotion regimen, nurses should encourage clients to participate in activities they enjoy so that the exercise is seen as fun rather than an obligation. Nurses should also suggest to clients to initially limit exercise and physical activity times to multiple short periods and then build up gradually to achieve desired level.
As a nurse, I would recommend cardio exercises such as swimming or brisk walking three times a week not more than forty-five minutes each time because they provide a resistance workout while supporting the body weight. The client may start initially with exercising for 10 minutes each time and then advancing gradually to 45 minutes. I would also recommend an exercise partner or a personal trainer for support and motivation. Also, a personal trainer will help prevent injury and increase gains dramatically. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends two types of physical activity that makes breathing harder and heart beating faster for 150 minutes each week to improve health. Those physical activities are aerobic or cardio and muscle-strengthening exercises (CDC, 2015). Cardio exercises are responsible for a good respiratory system and heart condition. They strengthen the heart and also aids in lowering blood pressure. They also increase the red blood cells count to mobilize oxygen within the body (Healthline, 2016).
