Generalizability refers to how well we can apply concepts to a variety of different situations and people whereas external validity focuses more on specific question to be answered overall (Reichardt, 2011). Parker (1993) on the other hand defines generalizability as part of external validity. One focuses on the purpose for research while the other looks at how easily information can be applied in other situations. When you think about the two separately, it is easier to understand how two are not synonymous because they are both considering different aspects. Reichardt (2011) attempts to make his point about separating generalizability and external validity through the use of generalization across time and how the definition of external validity did not need to have this included. As such, they are separate and individual areas to consider. Another way of looking at this is by viewing it from a different stance. Is everything that is generalizable externally valid as well? We are focusing on how generalizability fits into the definition of external validity but viewing from a different stance can help to separate this concept within our minds.
